After years of serving as a fashion model for many brands, Christy began drawing her own inspiration from nature's timeless beauty and a deep reverence for craftsmanship, she set off as a young designer herself with a bold dream. Her vision materialized in 2013 into "Christy Dawn," a brand synonymous with exquisite, sustainable, and soulful fashion fueled by a desire to challenge the status quo. With her husband Aras Baskauskas by her side, she began designing vintage-inspired dresses using deadstock and leftover fabric, a cost-effective business model and sustainable alternative to creating new textiles. But soon they came to the acute awareness that having a smaller impact on the planet wasn’t the same as actively working to repair it, so they pioneered innovative solutions.
Through a partnership with Fibershed and Oshadi Studio’s Nishanth Chopra, they became stewards of a regenerative cotton farm in Kanjikoil, Tamil Nadu, India, where farmers use ancient, natural techniques to transform acres of bare, chemical-stripped land into lush fields. It avoids pesticides, but also focuses on promoting biodiversity to nourish the soil, microorganisms, insects, animals, and humans.
The brand's signature pieces had now become a canvas through which Christy could weave her narrative of conscious consumption and connecting consumers to the stories behind their garments. She had transformed the fashion narrative and was encouraging individuals to reconsider their consumption habits and invest in pieces that reflect their values and stand the test of time. Her commitment to using regenerative and organic materials, combined with ethical production practices, has set a new standard for sustainable fashion.
